ENTOMITE® SCIARID FLY CONTROL - The adult mite of the species Hypoaspis aculeifer is approximately 1mm, are yellow-brownish and has longish legs. The nymphs (young) are transparent-light brown. Both adults and nymphs are polyphagous, i.e. feeding on a range of different soil-dwelling prey species and are used for biocontrol of Sciarids, Shore flies, bulb mites and springtails.
This predatory mite inhabits the top layer of the soil. Females lay their eggs in the soil or in another appropriate substrate. The development rate depends on the temperature and is practically identical to the growth rate of its prey.
Hypoaspis -species prefer humid conditions e.g. humid plant compost and H. aculeifer is able to tolerate up to 7 weeks without food. H. aculeifer prefer a temperature range of 18-23°C. Predatory mites are rather insensible to chemical products applied above ground.

PLEASE NOTE – An important condition for the proper use of beneficial insects (biological pest controls) is the correct identification of the pest. Although pests may look quite similar, the controls are very specific in the pest they target; efficient control critically depends on selecting the right biological pest control agent. If in doubt please seek advice.
