The environmental benefits of green roofs are widely recognised, while roof gardens and roof terraces can provide much-needed outdoor space in urban areas. Due to the high degree of insulation that they provide, green roofs are known for their ability to provide an extremely constant temperature throughout the year. During the winter they keep the heat in, and in the summer they provide a relatively cool environment. Green roofs also have the ability to soften harsh edges of buildings in sensitive environments, making them blend in with the surrounding area. Green roofs provide habitat for insects and other wildlife. Where new buildings are built on greenfield sites, this new habitat can replace the habitat that would otherwise have been lost.

What is a ‘Green Roof’?

A green roof is a vegetation layer covering the roof of a building and will consist of a number of layers that form the green roof system.

A green roof is a sustainable roof the structure of which minimises the burden on the environment. The benefits of a green roof include:

• Extends the roof lifespan
• Provides rainwater management (please note that we will shortly be introducing water harvesting kits too!).

What does a green roof comprise of?

Whether it is sown in situ on your roof or supplied as fully grown mats, the components are the same:

• Vegetation
• Growing medium or substrate
• Drainage and moisture retention
Waterproofing & root proofing

Green roofs are becoming increasingly popular for the reasons identified above. However, until now it has been difficult for those wishing to construct small-scale green roofs to source the specialist materials required in small quantities. Buzz Organics® are pleased to announce a solution to this problem in the form of a new ‘Green Roof Kits’.

The Green Roof Kit bundles all the materials needed for a small flat green roof, readying it for planting. The kit provides protection and drainage materials to cover up to 9m2 of rooftop. Also included is an illustrated step-by-step instruction guide that shows you the exact steps needed to construct the green roof. The materials include a root barrier, drainage membrane and filter fleece. The root barrier prevents any root penetration to the underlying waterproofing. The drainage membrane retains rainwater for the plants, and perforations prevent water-logging. The filter fleece laid on top then retains the soil and plants, but lets plant roots penetrate to the water stored below.

The Buzz Organics® Green Roof Kits are ideal for creating a small green roof on a garage, extension or shed flat roof. There is an increasing demand for green roofs on these types of rooftop. They are becoming a popular alternative to standard felt roofs. Green roofs provide a more pleasant outlook and can help prolong the lifespan of the underlying waterproofing.

Once installed a green roof can require as little maintenance as an annual check-up. Typical low maintenance plants include turf, sedum and wildflowers. They can be found as plug plants or established mats. These are lightweight, easy to install, take hold more readily and create an instant flourishing green roof. Depending on the load the rooftop can bear and required soil depth, a wide range of other plants can be used too.
