Growing Systems - Cold Frames

Cold frames protect plants from frost and wind, providing a sheltered space for young plants; they are also ideal for ‘hardening off’ when your plants come out of the greenhouse. Cold frames are relatively inexpensive, simple structures providing a favourable environment for growing cool-weather crops in the very early spring, autumn, and even into the winter months.

Cold frames have no outside energy source, relying on sunlight for their source of heat. The ideal location for a cold frame is a southern or south-eastern exposure with a slight slope to ensure good drainage and maximum solar absorption. A sheltered spot with a wall or hedge to the north will provide protection against winter winds. Sinking the frame into the ground somewhat will also provide protection, using the earth for insulation.
